Linux
Also known as:
Linux was originally the name for an open source operating system kernel written by Linus Torvalds. It was intended as a free alternative to the Unix kernel. The name Linux is now most often used to refer to a variety of operating systems based on the Linux kernel and the (also open source and free) GNU operating system. Examples include Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo and Debian. Linux is a popular choice for web servers because it is stable and cheap or even free.
lossless compression
Also known as:
The goal of lossless compression is to re-write data in a way that it takes up less space, but does not lose any information. A file that has undergone compression of this type can be completely restored to its original form though decompressing. Lossless compression is very limited compared to lossy compression but must be used in cases where data can not be acceptably lost. GIF is a lossless compression method for images.
lossy compression
Also known as:
The goal of lossy compression is to re-write data in a way that it takes up less space, and when decompressed, is restored to something “close enough” to its original form. With lossy compression, some data is lost in the process, but this may be perfectly acceptable. A slight loss or corruption in sound or image data may not be detectable to most listeners or observers. JPEG is a lossy compression method for images.
