firewall
Also known as:
A firewall is a line of defense in networking. It is a filter to disallow certain connections to a computer or network. A firewall can be software on the protected computer, or a it can be a separate computer between the protected computer and the Internet. Firewalls can be configured to allow connections to or from only certain addresses, programs, or on certain ports.
fragmentation
Also known as:
frag,
fragmentation
As your computer writes and deletes files on your hard drive, the drive tends to become more and more fragmented. When a file is deleted, it opens up a gap on your disk where a new file can go. Often, when writing a new file, there are no gaps big enough to fit the whole thing. When this happens, the file must be written as fragments in many different locations around the disk. Fragmentation makes your disk slower. You can use a defragmentor to reorganize your disk and reduce fragments.
FTP
Also known as:
file transfer protocol
FTP is similar to HTTP in that it allows you to browse files on the Internet. FTP is non-graphical however, and only allows viewing, copying and deleting of files and folders. Many people update their personal or business websites using FTP. FTP can also be used to give Internet users access to archived files and programs. FTP is old, simplistic, and not very fast, but still very widely used.
