Refers to a file containing instructions to be run by a computer, in contrast to a data file, which may only contain text or the like. The file which is run to start your web browser is an example of an executable. Executables can contain viruses and other malicious things like spyware. Always be cautious when downloading new executables or programs. Only run programs from sources you trust. Virus scanners can be helpful in identifying dangerous executables, but are not perfect.
